Some took up the cause of those whom they considered as their Indigenous brothers and sisters. Some religious people cared for and trained populations, they protected the French language. History is not black and white: it is complex, full of shades of grey, errors and compromises. How would we ourselves have acted in their place at the time? For that matter, how will we be judged by the generations that follow us? Facing the past honestly Many no longer want to pay tribute to figures - with statues, streets and schools - who have had devastating effects on Indigenous cultures and identity. Yet they continue to suffer from intergenerational trauma. We are shocked by the prejudice and racism that inflicted so much suffering on Indigenous people. Many elements of Canada’s Christian past no longer exist. Today, some are tempted to dismiss history as, “in the past,” or to rewrite history, erase it or refuse to inherit it.
